Lithuania and Belarus were historically home to large and influential Jewish communities that were almost entirely eliminated during the Holocaust. Before World War 2, there were more than 110 synagogues and 10 yeshivot in Vilan alone. Before World War 2 the Lithuanian Jewish population was 160,000, representing some 7% of the entire population. Vilna itself had a Jewish community of nearly 100,000 – about 45% of the city’s total. Lithuania and Belarus were the great centers of Jewish learning. and today, many of the leading Israeli Charedi Yeshivot are successors to the famous Yeshivot of Lithuania that include Volozhin, Ponovezh, Telshe, Mir, Kelm and Slobodka.
